Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Environment and Forestry Ministry has issued a circular encouraging minimizing waste generation during the 2024 Eid season.

Quoting Circular Number 5 of 2024 concerning Waste Control for Eid al-Fitr 1445 Hijri here on Tuesday, Environment and Forestry Minister Siti Nurbaya Bakar called on regional heads to appeal, facilitate, and supervise waste handling during this year's Eid exodus and return flow period.

"Governors, district heads, and mayors shall carry out waste management at locations, such as bus terminals, train stations, sea ports, crossing ports, and airports, and ensure that waste management runs well," she stated.

She also expected the regional heads to educate travelers to minimize their waste. To reduce waste and anticipate a surge in waste generation, the circular encouraged waste collection in a segregated manner.

For instance, food waste, plastic packaging waste, and mask waste in rest areas should be separated and processed differently. The circular also stated that to anticipate queues in rest areas, garbage collectors can go around and set up a special station for segregating garbage.

The Ministry of Environment and Forestry also urged regional apparatus to set up posts and form a special task force for handling waste in districts and cities seven days before and after the Eid al-Fitr celebration.

It also recommended the Regional Apparatus Organization (OPD) in the environmental affairs field, especially for waste, to collect, sort, and transport waste, in collaboration with related parties.

"To reduce the amount of waste during Eid prayers, there are several things that can be done, including bringing prayer equipment from home and using prayer mats that can be reused and taken home after completing the Eid prayer," Minister Bakar remarked.
