Badung, Bali (ANTARA) - The Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction (GPDRR), which will take place in Bali this week, is an opportunity for countries to share experiences in tackling and reducing disaster risk, according to Head of the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) Lieutenant General Suharyanto.

The meeting, which would take place from May 25 to 28, 2022, was expected to produce concrete action to strengthen preparation for handling disasters and other crises, he said here on Tuesday.

"In this activity, I hope there will be a result of concrete action regarding disaster risk reduction," Suharyanto added Indonesia, as the host of the 2022 GPDRR, is one of 35 countries that face a high disaster risk, he added.

"Indonesia has experienced all kinds of disasters," he said after reviewing the implementation of a tsunami preparation simulation at Tanjung Benoa 02 Elementary School.

Thus, it has sufficient experience in disaster mitigation and preparation, he added. "We have good experiences in dealing with disasters, as well as local wisdom," Suharyanto said.

Based on these experiences, the Indonesian delegation would share information about efforts made to reduce disaster risk with representatives from other countries, he added.

“I believe other countries also have valuable experiences that can be adopted by Indonesia. So, we learn from each other and share," he remarked.

The Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction is a cross-institutional and countries forum that discusses global efforts to reduce disaster risk. During the meeting, the delegates evaluate the application of the Sendai Framework, which serves as a reference for countries in making preparedness policies and other disaster programs.

This activity is routinely scheduled by the United Nations Agency for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), which has been recognized by the United Nations General Assembly.

This year's GPDRR meeting, which is scheduled to be opened by President Joko Widodo on May 25, will be attended by more than 30 ministers and delegates from 185 countries.

Several high-ranking UN officials will also attend the event, including deputy secretary-general of the United Nations (UN), Amina J. Mohammed; UN special representative for disaster risk reduction, Mami Mizutori; president of the UN General Assembly, Abdulla Shahid; Vice President of Zambia, Mutale Nalumango; and director of the UNDP Crisis Bureau, Asako Okai.
