Jakarta (ANTARA) - The National Food and Drug Authority (BPOM) and Trade Ministry have taken steps to stop the distribution of some 415 thousand illegal cosmetics, most of which were imported from China, the Philippines, Thailand, and Malaysia.
BPOM Head Taruna Ikrar stated here on Monday that the total value of those illegal products is capped at Rp11.4 billion though the impacts or losses that it could bring to people can surpass that monetary figure.
Ikrar remarked that the products were discovered during the June-September 2024 monitoring period. It comprised products without distribution permits and those containing dangerous substances that had yet to undergo lab testing.
"Regarding these illegal imported cosmetics, which have been (seized), they will be destroyed. This is our measure to protect the people from the risk of illegal cosmetic products," he stated.

These products were found to be distributed in areas such as Sumatra, Java, Kalimantan, East Nusa Tenggara, Sulawesi, and Papua. He remarked that some brands commonly found were Lameila, Brilliant, Balle Meta, and others.
He noted that the BPOM, Trade Ministry, and other relevant institutions pursued the collaborative measure to protect the people, as it can harm MSMEs since it would be unfair for domestic companies that have complied with laws and regulations.
Moreover, he said, these products can put people's health at risk. He explained that when people in pursuit of looking better use these products, they could end up with damaged skin and other health issues, such as cancer.

On the occasion, Ikrar reminded companies to adhere to the law in their quest to fulfill market demands and consider the products' safety and quality. He noted that this is one way to reduce illegal cosmetic products' imports.
He also reminded people to become smart consumers by checking a cosmetic product's packaging, label, distribution license, and expiry date.
