Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Gymnastics Association (PB Persani) selected 20 gymnasts—10 men and 10 women—who will compete for a spot on the national team for the 2025 Artistic Gymnastics World Championships.

"Based on the results of the National Sports Week, we've chosen 10 male and 10 female athletes for our training program," PB Persani chairperson Ita Juliati said at the launch of the logo for the 2025 championship in Jakarta on Wednesday.

She informed that two male and two female athletes will undergo training in Japan, while others will train in Indonesia under the guidance of Japanese coaches.

Indonesia has been selected to host the 2025 world championship, which will take place from October 14 to 20 at the Indonesia Arena in Jakarta. The event is expected to attract 400 to 500 athletes from 60 countries.

Each country can field a maximum of three male and three female gymnasts in the competition. The training program in Japan and Indonesia will culminate in the selection of six Indonesian gymnasts for the national team.

PB Persani aims to use the Artistic Gymnastics World Championships as a test event to evaluate the readiness and competitiveness of Indonesia's gymnasts.

"Our ultimate goal is to qualify for the 2028 Olympics, not just with one athlete but ideally with multiple," Juliati said. "That's why we've requested the Ministry of Youth and Sports to establish a long-term training center."

Earlier this year, Rifda Irfanaluthfi made history by becoming the first Indonesian gymnast to qualify for the Olympics.

Despite suffering from injuries, Irfanaluthfi competed in the all-around gymnastics event at the 2024 Paris Olympics, scoring 9.166 points on the uneven bars. Her coach, Eva Novalina, provided support throughout the competition.
