Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Ombudsman has urged the government to devise a road map for the development of educational institutions to tackle the issue of the school zoning enrollment system.

During a discussion on the zoning enrollment system here on Thursday, Indonesian Ombudsman member Indraza Marzuki Rais noted that coordination with the ministry engaged in infrastructure and development affairs is needed to convey schools' needs, as identified by regional governments.

The government must also formulate concrete steps for establishing schools by considering geographical factors, population density, and the economy, including reaching remote areas.

The Indonesian Ombudsman also called for the fulfillment of public service standards in each school, for instance, in terms of the availability of facilities and infrastructure, equal teacher competencies, ease of transportation access, and fulfillment of special needs to realize equity in quality.

Furthermore, it also requested that the Education and Culture Minister's Regulation Number 1 of 2021 concerning the Admission of New Students in Kindergartens, Elementary Schools, Junior High Schools, High Schools, and Vocational Schools be evaluated.

"For the zoning track, provisions for providing quota for prospective students in blank spot areas should be created," Rais said.

As for the affirmation enrollment track, the government has been asked to review its requirements. Meanwhile, for the achievements enrolment track, the integration of electronic report cards and student enrollment registration applications is being encouraged.

Then, during the post-enrollment period, the Indonesian Ombudsman recommended the creation of guidelines for handling students who do not get enrolled in any school and a mechanism to sanction parties who intervene or commit violations in the enrollment process.
