Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Marine Corps of the Indonesian Navy (TNI-AL) is planning to establish five new battalions to beef up the country’s maritime defense posture in several areas.

“The plan is focused on infantry battalions,” commander of the Marine Corps, Major General Endi Supardi, informed in South Jakarta on Thursday.

According to Supardi, the new battalions will be stationed in Jakarta, Lampung, Ambon (Maluku), Nusantara, and Natuna (Riau Islands).

He added that each battalion will be equipped with sufficient defense systems and weaponry to safeguard Indonesia’s maritime areas.

The commander expressed the hope that the presence of the new battalions will strengthen the TNI-AL’s capacity to protect the country’s maritime territorial integrity.
