Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia’s ongoing mangrove rehabilitation efforts reflect its commitment to overcoming land degradation and shoring up ecosystems, the Peatland and Mangrove Restoration Agency (BRGM) has said. Indonesia wants to show that the target conveyed by President Joko Widodo at the 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) in Glasgow, England, was not just a promise, but a commitment that is being realized through real action, BRGM's deputy for planning and evaluation, Satyawan Pudyatmoko, said on the sidelines of the G20 Environment Deputies Meeting and Climate Sustainability Working Group (EDM-CSWG) here on Wednesday.

“First is the commitment to rehabilitate 600 thousand hectares (of mangroves). This is, of course, not a small matter, but it shows the world how big Indonesia's commitment is," he added.

Indonesia is targeting to rehabilitate 600 thousand hectares of mangroves by 2024. According to Pudyatmoko, the results of the actions that Indonesia has taken for mangrove rehabilitation will be shared during a ministerial meeting of G20 countries soon.

Indonesia will apprise the G20 of its success in mangrove rehabilitation in Tahura, Bali, where a former pond has been converted into a mangrove area "It means Indonesia aims to give a lesson that even ponds can be restored to become good mangroves as long as there is a commitment," he remarked.

In addition, at the EDM-CSWG forum, G20 nations are also aiming to encourage the strengthening of cooperation between member countries, based on successful examples of mangrove rehabilitation "Indonesia wants to raise that: the commitment from various countries. Let us work together to restore mangroves not only in Indonesia, but also in other countries that need rehabilitation," Pudyatmoko remarked.
