Jakarta (ANTARA) - Deputy Defense Minister Donny Ermawan Taufanto has emphasized the importance of implementing the principles of the ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific (AOIP) to maintain regional stability and security. At an international conference on ASEAN maritime cooperation here on Tuesday, he mentioned various threats to regional security and stability, including cross-border crimes, such as piracy and illegal fishing, which require a coordinated response between countries, guided by AOIP principles.

"With the spirit of AOIP, we must prioritize dialogue and cooperation over competition and rivalry, and ensure that every maritime initiative provides economic benefits and maintains the sustainability of the marine environment," Taufanto said.

The AOIP has been helping countries, especially ASEAN members, to prevent the use of a zero-sum-game approach in dealing with a problem.

The principles of AOIP encourage openness and dialogue as well as cooperation and collaboration in overcoming various challenges and issues, he added.

"Non-traditional security threats do not recognize national borders so collaboration in sharing intelligence (information) and resources is a key factor," Taufanto said.

At the conference, he also encouraged ASEAN countries to utilize various forums such as the ASEAN Maritime Forum (AMF) and Expanded AMF (EAMF) to address maritime issues in the region.
