Pekanbaru, Riau (ANTARA) - The Riau Province Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BBKSDA) has successfully rescued a female sun bear (Helarctos malayanus) found entangled in a snare in Batu Rijal Hilir Village, Peranap District, Indragiri Hulu District.BBKSDA Riau Head Supartono reported in Pekanbaru on Friday that a veterinarian examined the bear and found superficial wounds on its skin, consistent with injuries from a nylon snare

"Based on the condition of the wounds, the animal is estimated to have been entangled for less than 48 hours," Supartono remarked.

The rescue operation was launched after the BBKSDA received a report from a concerned resident on Monday (July 14).

The very next day, the BBKSDA Riau Animal Rescue Team was immediately deployed.

They carefully secured the protected animal from a resident's garden, ensuring its safety during the delicate process.

After being rescued, the sun bear was taken to the Animal Rescue Center in Pekanbaru, where it will undergo rehabilitation and recovery.

The Riau Natural Resources Conservation Agency further urged the public to refrain from setting snares or engaging in any activities that could endanger wildlife, especially species protected by law.

This incident follows a similar case on March 6, 2025, when another sun bear was found trapped and suffering from a spear stab wound in the Bukit Rimbang Baling Wildlife Sanctuary, Kampar District.

That male bear was discovered in a weakened condition with multiple injuries, and examination revealed it had lost one front leg due to prolonged snaring, with the other leg showing signs of severe decay.
