Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia's Minister of Home Affairs Tito Karnavian expressed hope that Jakarta would become an economic center akin to New York City in the United States or Sydney and Melbourne in Australia.

"We also want the city of Jakarta to become one of the main centers in the fields of economy, services, banking, etc,” Karnavian stated at the working meeting with the House of Representatives (DPR) at the Parliament Complex in Jakarta, Wednesday.

“The point is that it is roughly the same as New York in America or Sydney, Melbourne in Australia,” he remarked.

Karnavian underscored the need for a joint commitment among DPR, the Regional Representative Council (DPD), and the government to develop Jakarta into a world-class city or global city.

"Which not only competes or has competitiveness at the Southeast Asian regional level but is also on par with other developed cities in the world," he stated.

Karnavian also affirmed that the government agreed to discuss the Bill on the Special Region of Jakarta (RUU DKJ) as an implication of Law Number 3 of 2022 concerning the National Capital (UU IKN).

"On behalf of the government, we agree to carry out further discussions together on the proposal or initiative of the Bill on the Special Region of Jakarta while still paying attention to overall harmony with the relevant laws and regulations," he remarked.

According to Chairman of the Legislative Body of DPR, Supratman Andi Agtas, Jakarta should be designed in a way that it is not merely limited to being a center of the national economy and a global city.

"It (should be designed in a way that it) also makes Jakarta grow and develop as a major megapolitan city at the national, regional, and global levels, with the formation of agglomeration areas as support for integrated buffer areas, which is Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, Bekasi, and Cianjur," Agtas remarked.
