Medan (ANTARA) - Mulia Syahputra Nasution from Medan City Legislative Council's (DPRD's) Commission III demanded Medan's government, through its Regional Public Company (PUD) Pembangunan, to be more serious about improving Medan Zoo's quality after three tigers died last year.
"Medan Zoo lost three tigers in November and December 2023. This tragedy requires increased attention and commitment to improve Medan Zoo's animals," Nasution remarked here, Sunday.
In the last two months of 2023, two Sumatran tigers died, namely Erha on November 6, 2023, and Putri on December 31, 2023. Meanwhile, a Bengal tiger named Avatar was also found dead at Medan Zoo that is owned by the Medan city government on December 3, 2023.
Medan Zoo has a total of 76 cages, with 255 animals, comprising 163 aves, 60 mammals, and 32 reptiles, on 10 hectares of land out of a total area of 30 hectares. Medan Mayor Bobby Nasution stated that Medan Zoo is experiencing a financial crisis resulting in animal feed debt and paying employees who manage this zoo.

He emphasized that PUD Pembangunan immediately took countermeasures, including paying the salaries of Medan Zoo employees for several months.
"Medan Zoo is under the PUD Pembangunan and several other business units. Currently, there is only one profit business unit and that is for the animals there and the Medan Zoo employees," Nasution stated.
