Jakarta (ANTARA) - President Prabowo Subianto has informed that he and Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva have agreed to broaden the scope of bilateral ties by tapping into more cooperation opportunities.

Upon landing at the Halim Perdanakusuma Air Base in Jakarta on Wednesday after his five-nation diplomatic tour, he affirmed his commitment to strengthening economic and trade ties between Indonesia and Brazil by harnessing the two countries’ natural resources.

“Both Brazil and Indonesia are large countries with vast areas of tropical forests—positioning us as the lungs of the world. Moreover, our countries are blessed with abundant natural resources,” he told the media.

However, he noted that despite sharing these strengths, Indonesia and Brazil have yet to fully capitalize on their cooperation potential.

“This is a puzzling trend. President Lula and I share the same view that our bilateral trade ties remain stuck at an unfavorable level. Hence, we agreed to bolster our relations in this field,” he said.

He also reiterated that Indonesia has been accepted as a full member of BRICS, and he intends to make the most of this status to elevate partnerships with fellow member states.

Prabowo and da Silva convened a bilateral meeting in Brasilia, Brazil, last week to step up bilateral relations across various sectors.

In the area of defense, Indonesia and Brazil explored avenues for cooperation in military personnel capacity building and the development of related technologies, particularly missiles and submarines.

The two presidents also used the meeting to discuss ways to foster a fairer and more balanced international trade system and advance negotiations on the comprehensive economic partnership agreement between Indonesia and the Southern Common Market, or Mercosur.

In the field of food security, both countries agreed to jointly develop agricultural technology, exchange information, organize technical training and research, and promote the implementation of smart and sustainable agricultural practices.

Furthermore, they voiced their commitment to expanding cooperation in clean and renewable energy sources, such as solar energy, hydro, geothermal, and biofuel.

On the global stage, Indonesia and Brazil are aligned on the importance of working together to push for reform within the United Nations, promote multilateralism, and advocate for the enforcement of international law. In addition, the two governments have agreed on the urgent need to end Israel’s aggression and ensure lasting peace in Palestine.
