Jakarta (ANTARA) - Deputy Speaker of the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) Lestari Moerdijat said that the children's protection system against violence must be taken seriously.

"Consistent steps to build a protection system for children against violence must receive serious attention, along with the increasingly complex challenges in the globalization era," Moerdijat said in a written statement received here on Sunday.

According to data from the Online Information System on the Protection of Women and Children (SimfoniPPA) accessed on Sunday, July 7, 2024, at 7:15 p.m. local time, there were 7,338 cases of violence against children between January and June 2024. These cases involved 5,798 girls and 2,353 boys.

The data revealed that sexual violence is the most common form, with 4,537 cases reported. Therefore, Moerdijat said that cases of violence against children must be taken seriously, as a real step to protect all children in the country.

Moreover, she said that efforts to protect children are increasingly challenging amid the digital era. In addition to physical violence, she explained that psychological violence on digital platforms is now rampant every day.

She hoped that stakeholders both at the central and regional levels could find the roots of violence cases. She said that appropriate steps can help prevent and suppress the number of child violence cases.
