Jakarta (ANTARA) - Head of the Indonesian Migrant Workers Protection Agency (BP2MI), Benny Rhamdani, has asked universities to equip students with the necessary skills to seize job opportunities abroad.

"To encourage people not only to think about getting a job inside the country, but to also seize job opportunities abroad that are very open," Rhamdani said after delivering a public lecture at UIN Syarif Hidayatullah in South Tangerang, Banten province, on Wednesda

On that occasion, he also disseminated information about the protection of Indonesian migrant workers (PMI). He emphasized that a huge effort must be made by higher education institutions to prepare quality human resources.

Universities should help students to learn skills and competencies needed by the placement country through link and match with the industry, he added. He highlighted that there are many job opportunities that can be pursued by the Indonesian people and they need to be encouraged to go for them.

However, to get the jobs, the Indonesian workforce will have to compete with other countries who wish to place their citizens abroad, Rhamdani said.

"(There is a need to) Prepare them to have language skills, the competence, and expertise in the job sector they choose," he added.

For this reason, he said, BP2MI is continuing to encourage the matching of skills taught in higher education and skills demanded by employers through link and match. On Wednesday, BP2MI also signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with UIN Syarif Hidayatullah.

Rhamdani said he hoped that the agreement would contribute significantly in terms of preparing human resources at the university level. In particular, he highlighted huge job opportunities in the health sector for Indonesian students. He expressed the hope that they would graduate with the skills needed by placement countries, including in the Middle East and Europe.
