Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia’s waste management rate reached 24.95 percent as of January 2026, Environment Minister Hanif Faisol Nurofiq said Wednesday, a significant rise from 10 percent recorded in early 2025, reflecting progress in nationwide waste handling.Speaking during a podcast with ANTARA in Jakarta, Nurofiq said a March 2025 evaluation of 472 districts and cities showed management covered only about 10 percent of the 141,000 tons of daily waste generated nationwide.

“We provided guidance and outreach for nearly a year. By January 2026, our inspections and monitoring show substantial improvement,” he said, highlighting government efforts to boost local waste management capacity.

The minister noted that many existing waste facilities are not yet operating at full capacity.

“If all facilities were fully operational, the waste management rate could reach 57.3 percent,” he said, stressing the potential for further improvement.

Even so, the figure remains below the national target of 100 percent by 2029, as outlined in Indonesia’s National Medium-Term Development Plan (RPJMN). President Prabowo Subianto has set an interim target of 63.4 percent for national waste management by 2026.

Nurofiq said steps have already been taken and will continue to be prioritized to meet this goal.

Measures include urging local governments to enforce strict household-level waste sorting and building Waste-to-Energy (WtE) plants in 34 districts nationwide. The government is also promoting the National Indonesia ASRI (Safe, Healthy, Clean, and Beautiful) Movement, following the president’s directives.

As part of this initiative, waste cleanup activities are being carried out across numerous regions in Indonesia.
