Pekanbaru, Riau (ANTARA) - Thirty-four former members of the terror group Anshor Daulah (AD) renounced terrorism and reaffirmed their loyalty to the Republic of Indonesia in Riau on Friday.

According to the deputy chief of the Indonesian Police’s counter-terror squad Special Detachment 88, Brigadier General I Made Astawa, the pledge marks a complete break from their past as members of the terror organization.

“Their renouncement and subsequent loyalty pledge is part of their recovery and transformation to once again stand on their own feet for the Republic of Indonesia and its ideology,” Astawa said.

The 34 individuals, who were previously affiliated with the ISIS terror group through AD, took their oath of allegiance at Balai Serindit, the official residence of the Riau Governor.

Astawa noted that terrorism manifests not only in physical violence but also in the silent indoctrination of ideologies that justify hatred and terror in the name of religion.

“Do not ostracize those who have reaffirmed their loyalty. Support us instead in helping them become Indonesian nationals again,” Wahid said.

Recognizing the determination it takes to renounce terrorism, the governor said Riau province is proud of the 34 individuals who declared their loyalty to Indonesia.

“I am pleased that all of them have a strong will to let go of the deviant thoughts and views that influenced their perspectives and behavior in the past,” he added.
