Jakarta fields 1,800 workers to clean 79.29 tons of I-Day waste

Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Jakarta provincial government deployed nearly two thousand sanitation workers to collect around 79.29 tons of waste generated during the celebrations of Indonesia’s 80th Independence Day, which peaked on Sunday (August 17).

“The number of personnel we fielded reached 1,800,” Public Relations Official of the Jakarta Environment Office, Yogi Ikhwan, stated in Jakarta on Monday.

Detailing the deployment, he explained that 400 workers were stationed in Central Jakarta, while 200 each were assigned to North, East, South, and West Jakarta. In addition, 100 personnel were deployed to the Integrated Waste Management Unit (UPST), while another 500 worked under the Waste Processing Unit (UPS) of the Environment Office’s Water Agency.

Ikhwan noted that the cleanup officers were supported with various facilities and equipment, including 12 non-organic waste trucks, 10 mini dump trucks, 12 compactor trucks, 14 road sweepers, and 40 dust bins.

Earlier, on Friday (August 15), Head of the Jakarta Environment Office, Asep Kuswanto, emphasized that the 1,800 officers would work in two sessions, focusing on several high-density areas such as the Kalibata Heroes' Cemetery, the National Monument (Monas) area, and Sudirman and MH Thamrin streets.

He added that the Environment Office also would also deploy cleaning teams both inside and outside Monas to assist street food vendors in maintaining cleanliness during the festivities.

In addition to waste transport vehicles, the city prepared 20 cars carrying portable toilets; 10 stationed in Monas, three in front of the Kempinski Hotel, three in front of the Pullman Hotel, two at Sumenep Park, and one each at Dukuh Atas and the Sampoerna Strategic area.

“Celebrations on a scale this large demand extra preparations. Beyond rallying personnel, it is equally important to position support vehicles and manage waste strategically,” Kuswanto remarked.
