Syiah Kuala University forges academic ties with African universities

Banda Aceh, Aceh (ANTARA) - Syiah Kuala University (USK) in Banda Aceh has strengthened its global vision by signing cooperation agreements with three leading African universities to advance education, research, and community service.The agreements were sealed Tuesday at USK’s Senate Hall with the Islamic University in Uganda, the University of Hargeisa, and Amoud University.

Rector Prof. Marwan said the collaboration marks a new phase of academic exchange while underscoring USK’s track record of producing outstanding African alumni.

“USK has a long history of building human resources across borders, including in Thailand, Palestine, and Afghanistan. This partnership expands that mission to Africa,” he said.

The cooperation covers joint research, student and staff exchanges, academic publications, conferences, postgraduate programs, and capacity building.

Marwan said USK expects lecturers from Uganda to soon pursue advanced studies at its medical faculty, in line with Uganda’s plan to establish its own medical school.

He added that he had studied Somaliland extensively and hopes USK can support higher education development there, despite the challenges the region faces.

Deputy Rector for Finance and Administration at the Islamic University in Uganda Prof. Abdul Mpasta Kaziba expressed gratitude for the agreement, noting that cooperation will focus on medicine and information technology.

He also invited USK’s rector to attend his university’s graduation ceremony in December.

Marwan emphasized that the partnerships reaffirm USK’s commitment to becoming a world-class university and contributing to global knowledge exchange.

“This collaboration will benefit not only our institutions but also the wider communities we serve,” he said.
