Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia welcomed the ceasefire between Hamas and Israel in Gaza and said it is ready to support reconstruction efforts in the Palestinian territory, the Foreign Ministry said on Friday. The truce, brokered by the United States, Egypt, Qatar and Turkey, marks the first phase of a peace initiative aimed at ending months of conflict that have devastated the Gaza Strip.

Indonesia’s Foreign Ministry described the ceasefire as a significant step toward a permanent end to the violence and called on all parties to honor the agreement in good faith.

“It is hoped that access for humanitarian aid will be opened widely, and Indonesia is ready to actively support Gaza’s reconstruction process,” the ministry said in a statement posted on social media platform X.

Jakarta also urged the international community to seize the momentum of the truce to revive peace negotiations based on a two-state solution in accordance with international agreements and UN resolutions.

“This positive development must ultimately lead to the establishment of an independent and sovereign Palestinian state,” the statement said.

Indonesia expressed appreciation to the countries that mediated the cease-fire and reiterated its longstanding support for the Palestinian cause. The United States announced the deal on Wednesday. President Donald Trump said the first phase includes the release of all hostages and the withdrawal of Israeli forces to agreed positions.

Trump said on Truth Social that he was proud to announce an agreement between Israel and Hamas on the initial phase of the US-proposed peace plan. UN Secretary-General António Guterres also welcomed the cease-fire and the agreement on hostage release, calling it a step toward addressing the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

In a recent speech at the United Nations Summit on Palestine and the Two-State Solution in New York, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto condemned Israel’s military actions in Gaza, calling them genocide that has killed tens of thousands of Palestinians, mostly women and children.

He reaffirmed Indonesia’s commitment to a two-state solution as the only viable path to lasting peace between Israel and Palestine. Indonesia’s support for Palestine dates back to founding President Soekarno, who declared in 1962, “As long as the freedom of Palestine has yet to be returned to the Palestinians, it will forever be Indonesia’s duty to oppose Israel’s occupation.”

That principle continues to guide Jakarta’s foreign policy and its consistent backing for Palestinian statehood.
