Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Japanese Ambassador to Indonesia, Masaki Yasushi, has praised Indonesia's digital payment facility, the Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard (QRIS), developed by Bank Indonesia (BI).At a press briefing in Jakarta on Thursday, Masaki said that he was quite impressed with the development of Indonesia's payment technology, adding that it is likely more advanced than Japan's.
"QRIS is one of the really best tools here in Indonesia. So, if it can be used by Indonesians in Japan, that will facilitate much the Indonesian people's trip or stay in Japan," he said.
At present, a significant number of Indonesians are visiting or living in Japan, he noted, adding that the rollout of QRIS in Japan will help boost their number further.
QRIS is a national QR code standard developed by BI to support digital payments in Indonesia.

It allows users to conduct various types of payment transactions, transfer funds, withdraw cash, and deposit cash simply by scanning a QR code through an electronic money application, digital wallet, or mobile banking.

So far, QRIS has been implemented in several countries such as Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand.
On May 21, 2025, BI announced that QRIS will be made available in Japan and China from August 17, 2025. It also plans to expand QRIS services to South Korea and Saudi Arabia.
