Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Social Affairs Ministry and Public Works Ministry are set to develop 100 permanent Sekolah Rakyat buildings starting in September 2025, with the project expected to be completed by June 2026.

Social Affairs Minister Saifullah Yusuf stated here on Saturday that each permanent building will accommodate one thousand students and will offer education from primary through high school levels.

"Currently, the Sekolah Rakyat pilot programs are utilizing central and regional government facilities," Yusuf explained.

The existing facilities have limited capacity, with some only able to serve two to four classes. Therefore, the permanent buildings are being developed to cater to more students, he added.

Moreover, his administration is simultaneously preparing the recruitment process for teachers, principals, educators, and students as the schools' development progresses. The permanent buildings will also feature kitchens, boarding rooms, and other supporting facilities, all designed to meet national standards, Yusuf stated.

Currently, the first 100 schools serve 9,700 students, and the next 100 are expected to cater to 10 thousand students.

"What is important is for all of us to collaborate. It cannot be achieved alone. Together, Insha Allah, the target can be achieved," he remarked.

He explained that Sekolah Rakyat is a state-run boarding school initiative aimed at educating children from underprivileged families. It is intended not only for underprivileged children from urban areas but also for those from remote and indigenous communities, such as Jambi’s Anak Dalam people.

He also highlighted that Sekolah Rakyat's curriculum covers core subjects, along with additional lessons in character building and extracurricular activities to nurture smart, patriotic students with strong values.
