Tangerang (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Environment and Forestry has made it compulsory for regional industrial zones to install Air Quality Monitoring Systems (AQMS) and Continuous Emission Monitoring Systems (CEMS) for real-time monitoring of air conditions.The move is a part of wider efforts to lower air pollution.
Minister of Environment, Hanif Faisol Nurofiq, said in Tangerang, Banten, on Monday that the directive has been issued in response to worsening air quality in the Greater Jakarta (Jabodetabek) area, which requires concrete measures to address.
“There are 166 industrial zones across Indonesia, with 48 located in Jabodetabek—including seven in Tangerang city. We have recorded approximately 6,800 smokestacks in Jabodetabek contributing to declining air quality,” he informed.

Tangerang Mayor Sachrudin expressed support for the ministry’s initiative to curb air pollution, including inspecting smokestacks in the Jatake industrial area.
He added that Tangerang city currently operates four air quality monitoring stations. Should further installations be required, they will be added in keeping with KLHK directives.

“We hope all residents of Tangerang will also contribute to maintaining air quality by refraining from burning waste because protecting our air is a shared responsibility for the future,” he said.
