Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Turkish Embassy in Jakarta strengthened its engagement with the Indonesian public through the celebration of World Turkish Coffee Day held on Friday, December 5.

Turkish Ambassador to Indonesia Talip Kucukcan explained that the commemoration, observed annually on December 5 in various countries including Indonesia, highlights the unique characteristics of Turkish coffee.

He noted that the celebration not only aims to promote Turkey’s coffee culture but also serves as a platform to foster closer ties between communities, including with Indonesian citizens. Kucukcan emphasized that this year’s Turkish Coffee Day also marks the seventy-fifth anniversary of diplomatic relations between Turkey and Indonesia. Through this event, Turkey seeks to enhance people-to-people connections and strengthen bilateral cooperation.

He stated that although Turkey does not produce coffee beans, it has developed a distinctive method of preparing coffee that brings people together and unites communities through its coffee-making tradition.

"That’s why we want to introduce this culture to Indonesia, because we believe Turkey and Indonesia share many common values. And Indonesia is also a coffee-producing country,” he said.

He explained that the tradition has developed since the sixteenth century, around six hundred years ago, when coffee from Yemen captured public interest and created a new cultural practice.

The tradition was later recognized by UNESCO as an intangible cultural heritage, requiring protection and preservation. “So, this is something we want to protect and preserve,” Kucukcan noted.

In addition to promoting this culture, the Turkish Embassy also showcased traditional fabrics from various regions of Turkey. The exhibition featured textiles from the nineteenth century, aimed at highlighting the development of textile technology during that period, particularly silk production. Turkey is located along the historic Silk Road, an ancient trade route that flourished beginning in the second century BC.
