Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto announced the plan to reactivate the Indonesia–Thailand Energy Forum (ITEF) as a concrete step to strengthen energy security cooperation with Thailand.

This was conveyed during his joint statement with Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra at the Government House, Bangkok, on Monday.

"We will also reactivate the Indonesia–Thailand Energy Forum this year," he remarked.

He considered this forum a strategic platform to encourage collaboration between governments and business actors in the energy sector, including new and renewable energy. Moreover, Indonesia welcomes opportunities for Thai counterparts to directly participate in developing Indonesia's energy sector.

"We are opening opportunities for Thai entities to participate in the Indonesian energy sector," Prabowo remarked.

According to information on the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources website, the ITEF aims to increase cooperation between Indonesia and Thailand in the energy sector.

This forum was established following an agreement between the President of the Republic of Indonesia and Prime Minister of Thailand in Jakarta in October 2006 and the signing of a Joint Statement on the Establishment of the Energy Forum by the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources and the Minister of Energy of Thailand on December 21, 2007.

The most recent ITEF was held in Indonesia on July 28-29, 2010, in Yogyakarta with the theme "Strengthening Cooperation and Tightening Friendship in the Energy Sector."

In addition to discussing energy cooperation, the two leaders also exchanged views on the humanitarian crisis in Myanmar, support for a ceasefire in Gaza, and strategic cooperation between Indonesia and Thailand in various fields, including economy and trade, halal industry, and health.

President Prabowo departed Jakarta on Saturday (May 17) for Bangkok, Thailand, for an official visit to meet with the King of Thailand, Maha Vajiralongkorn, and Prime Minister Shinawatra.
