Jakarta (ANTARA) - The government is targeting consumer spending of Rp110 trillion (around US$6.56 billion) by the end of 2025, supported by shopping discount programs rolled out across malls and e-commerce platforms, a senior minister said.Speaking at a press conference in Jakarta on Friday, Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto said the government has launched several initiatives to boost consumption, including the National Online Shopping Day and the Shop Locally in Indonesia campaign.

He added that these discount programs are expected to lift consumer spending and contribute positively to national economic growth this year.

Airlangga explained that the Shop Locally in Indonesia campaign, organized by the Indonesian Retail and Tenant Association (Hippindo) across its member malls, is targeting transactions of up to Rp30 trillion through January 4, 2026.

Meanwhile, the National Online Shopping Day program, held from December 10 to 16, recorded Rp35 trillion in transactions, he added.

He noted that discounts at participating stores can reach up to 50 percent, with additional discounts of up to 25 percent and cashback offers of up to 10 percent, which are expected to boost consumer interest.

Beyond domestic consumption, Airlangga also highlighted tourism's role in driving spending, expressing optimism that shopping tourism will increasingly attract foreign visitors.

"Especially among Malaysian tourists, who often combine leisure trips with shopping and travel on the Whoosh high-speed rail," he said.

He added that shopping centers now play a broader economic role, with the government encouraging malls to function as productive spaces, including by accommodating people who work from anywhere.
