Banyuwangi, East Java (ANTARA) - Minister of Youth and Sports Dito Ariotedjo said that the 2024 International Tour de Banyuwangi Ijen (ITdBI) could help advance bike racing events in Indonesia.

"I highly appreciate that Banyuwangi is consistent in organizing world-class sports tourism events," he said while watching the first stage of the 2024 ITdBI on Monday.

Ariotedjo lauded the district government's efforts to promote ITdBI as an international-level sports tourism event. At least 20 teams from 13 countries participated in the event.

The ITdBI event, part of the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) agenda, aims to motivate the public to exercise and is considered an opportunity for cycling athletes to gain more achievements.

"The racers' enthusiasm is expected to inspire the public to make sports their daily routine, and another positive impact is that the tour helps boost the local economy," Ariotedjo said.

The ITdBI was first held in 2012. It was halted during the COVID-19 pandemic, and the event is finally being held again in 2024 with its ninth edition.

Banyuwangi district head Ipuk Fiestiandani said that the event is the district's pride as it is the only bicycle race in Indonesia to be included in the UCI agenda.

"We are committed to continuing to make bicycle racing an instrument of sports and tourism, to stimulate the economy, and to consolidate regional infrastructure," she added.
