Jakarta (ANTARA) - President Prabowo Subianto has approved a plan to increase teachers' welfare by hiking the salary of non-civil servant (ASN) teachers by Rp2 million (USD122) and ASN teachers by one-time their basic salary.

This was conveyed by Minister of Primary and Secondary Education, Abdul Mu'ti, after a meeting with Prabowo at the Presidential Palace complex, Jakarta, on Tuesday.

"Later, the increase in teacher welfare will be announced. Non-ASN teachers will receive a raise of Rp2 million and the raise for ASN teachers will be up by one time of their basic salary," he informed. However, he did not mention when the policy will take effect.

Mu'ti said that in the case of ASN teachers, only the nominal basic salary will be taken into account.

"Only one basic salary," he emphasized.

The minister has requested Prabowo to announce the policy at the commemoration of National Teachers' Day (HGN) at Rawamangun Velodrome, East Jakarta, on November 28, 2024.

As per the agenda, representatives of teachers from various regions have been invited to the commemoration.

"The President has conveyed his willingness to open and speak at the commemoration of the 2024 National Teacher's Day themed 'Great Teachers, Strong Indonesia,'" Mu'ti confirmed.

The theme reflects the important role of teachers as agents of learning, civilization, and determinants of human resource quality. Earlier on Monday, Mu'ti said that his ministry will improve teacher welfare by providing certification allowances rather than salary increases.

"Our ministry does not have the authority to increase teacher salaries, the authority lies with other ministries. However, we can improve teacher welfare through certification," he explained.

He said that the ministry can improve teacher welfare by providing certification allowances after they pass the Teacher Professional Education (PPG) certification.

Therefore, the ministry is currently preparing training for 850 thousand teachers to participate and pass the PPG certification in 2025.
