Jakarta (ANTARA) - Deputy Foreign Minister Anis Matta stated that the United States’ decision to veto a United Nations Security Council (UNSC) draft resolution calling for a ceasefire in Gaza is unacceptable and deeply regrettable.

“I believe it is a very bad decision,” Matta said, responding to the US veto that blocked the latest attempt at the UNSC to pass a resolution aimed at ending Israeli aggression in Gaza.

Speaking at the opening of the "2025 Arts Lumiere Indonesia Festival (ALIF): Muslim World Movie Screening" by the Indonesian Foreign Ministry in Jakarta on Friday evening, he reaffirmed Indonesia’s determination to advocate for the Palestinian cause at the UN despite deadlock in the Security Council.

Palestinian independence will also be a key issue voiced by President Prabowo Subianto during the UN General Assembly’s General Debate at the UN Headquarters next week, Matta added.

“We will be focused on supporting Palestinian independence,” said the deputy minister, regarding the issues the president will highlight in his UN remarks.

United States has again blocked a draft UNSC resolution calling for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and the release of all remaining hostages. The US was the sole opposing vote, while the other 14 members voted in favor.

Drafted by the 10 non-permanent members of the council, the resolution demanded an “immediate, unconditional and permanent ceasefire in Gaza” and reaffirmed calls for the prompt release of all hostages still held by Hamas.

The resolution also urged Israel to lift all restrictions on the entry of humanitarian assistance into the enclave and ensure its unimpeded distribution to civilians.

Earlier in June, the US similarly vetoed a draft UNSC resolution calling for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza and the removal of restrictions on aid deliveries.
