Jakarta (ANTARA) - Deputy Speaker of the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) Eddy Soeparno has stressed the importance of ensuring regional readiness for the Waste-to-Energy (WtE) initiative, which is set to be launched in 34 locations across Indonesia.

He said regional governments need to prepare for a transition period during the rollout phase, particularly to anticipate potential increases in waste volumes during Eid al-Fitr and other major holidays.

“Preparation during this transition period can be carried out by strengthening basic waste management services, optimizing waste collection, organizing temporary disposal sites, and taking firm action against illegal dumping,” he said in Jakarta on Wednesday.

Soeparno added that during the preparatory stage of the Waste-to-Energy program (WtE), he has held dialogues with mayors from several priority regions.

According to him, local leaders, including the mayors of Bandung, Palembang, South Tangerang, Yogyakarta, Manado, Balikpapan, and Denpasar, have shared various inputs related to the program’s implementation.

“The input ranges from efforts to maximize the 1,000-ton processing capacity to ensuring that the Waste-to-Energy program is in line with initiatives to change public behavior in waste management,” he said.

The MPR deputy speaker expressed appreciation for the initiative and reaffirmed his support, noting that Indonesia has faced persistent waste management challenges for years without a comprehensive solution.
