Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesian Transportation Minister Dudy Purwagandhi stated that as many as 119.5 million people are expected to travel, both within and outside their respective provinces, during the 2025 Christmas and 2026 New Year holiday period."According to the survey, 42.01 percent of Indonesia's population, or approximately 119.5 million people, are likely to travel during the Christmas and New Year holiday period," he said during a discussion with the media here on Friday.
He affirmed that his ministry, through the Transportation Policy Agency, in collaboration with Statistics Indonesia (BPS), the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs, and academics, had conducted a survey on the Potential Movement of People during Christmas 2025 and New Year 2026.
The survey results show the percentage of Indonesia's population that will potentially travel during the year-end holiday increased by 2.71 percentage points from 39.30 percent last year to 42.01 percent.
Minister Purwagandhi explained that the increased public interest in traveling during the year-end holiday period had been caused by several factors, including the long holiday period as the school break coincides with the Christmas and New Year holidays.

Apart from that, the improving condition of transportation infrastructure is also cited as one of the factors.
Other factors include the high public interest in tourism, homecoming tradition, and economic aspects.

Meanwhile, several other transportation modes picked include planes, buses, and long-distance trains.
"The high public interest in using private vehicles indicates the need for more intensive traffic management, particularly on toll roads and access routes leading to transportation hubs," the minister said.
