Vesak celebration in Singkawang promotes tolerance, nationalism

Singkawang, West Kalimantan (ANTARA) - Vesak 2570 BE celebrations in Singkawang, West Kalimantan, were marked not only by religious rituals but also by social activities aimed at strengthening tolerance and nationalism, Mayor Tjhai Chui Mie said.She said community service activities, including visits and clean-ups at heroes’ cemeteries, play a key role in instilling respect for national figures.

“This is not merely about cleaning graves, but also reflecting inward and expressing gratitude for the independence we enjoy,” she said at Bambu Runcing Heroes Cemetery on Sunday.

She added that Buddhist teachings emphasize “Katannu Katavedy,” which promotes gratitude and repaying kindness, including honoring national heroes. According to her, these values are relevant in daily life and can be expressed through actions such as maintaining and caring for heroes’ graves.

“Our heroes made great sacrifices for the nation. Our duty is to continue their struggle by contributing positively,” she said.

The mayor said the activities also reflect strong interfaith tolerance in Singkawang, known for its diverse population.

“Vesak is a moment to strengthen national unity, patriotism, and solidarity amid diversity,” she said.

She expressed hope that values such as social care, mutual cooperation, and respect for heroes will be passed on to younger generations.
