Jakarta (ANTARA) - Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), Indonesia's largest Islamic organization, will summon five members who met with Israeli President Isaac Herzog after an image of their meeting went viral on social media.

"They will be summoned to explain the meeting's purpose, background, trip funding, and other details," NU Executive Board (PBNU) Secretary General Saifullah Yusuf noted in a statement on Monday.

The PBNU will also seek an explanation from the leaders of the autonomous NU body where the five members serve. If found to have violated NU rules, they will be dismissed from the body.

Yusuf expressed regret over their visit to Israel and meeting with Herzog while identifying themselves as "NU youths."

"The five members lacked a mandate from the PBNU and never requested permission," he pointed out.

Yusuf called their trip "a very unwise action" given the mounting Israeli-Palestinian tensions. The NU strongly condemns Israel's violence against Palestinians.

"That visit hurts us all," he affirmed.

Indonesia firmly supports the Palestinian independence. The nation does not recognize Israel, and Jakarta has no diplomatic relations with Tel Aviv.
