New York (ANTARA) - Indonesia is running for non-permanent member seat of the UN Security Council for 2029-2030, Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi stated before the UN General Assembly in New York on Saturday (Sept 28).
"This candidature reflects our deep commitment to contributing towards global peace and security," she said while announcing Indonesia's candidature for a non-permanent seat on the Council.
Indonesia was a non-permanent member to the UN Security Council in the 2019-2020 term. It also assumed the role in 1974-1975, 1995-1996, and 2007-2008 terms. Retno emphasized that peace justice and humanity would always be at the core of Indonesia's foreign policy
Indonesia, she added, understood that global leadership was not something that was inherited nor did it fall from the sky.
"It must be earned through our collective efforts. Rest assured that Indonesia's commitment towards common peace, common prosperity and common security, will be carried forward across Indonesia's successive administrations," she said.

Indonesia often criticizes the current leadership of the Security Council, considering that many global issues have failed to be resolved. Take the major issue of the conflict in Palestine, for example. Previously in a different forum, Retno questioned the leadership of the Security Council to create peace.
"Reforming the Security Council is very necessary to ensure leadership for peace," she noted.
She further mentioned two steps that should be carried out for the Council reform, including a more democratic decision-making mechanism as well as accommodating more voices from the world community, rather than just a handful of countries.
