Indonesia's Internet speed has increased by ten times in the last decade since President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) took office, Communication and Informatics Minister Budi Arie Setiadi has highlighted."Back in 2014, our Internet speed was pegged only at 2.5 megabytes per second (Mbps). Now, 10 years apart, the speed has hit an average of 25 Mbps, thereby translating to a tenfold increase," he explained in Jakarta on Friday.
Setiadi underlined that President Widodo's administration has been paying special attention to the need to improve Internet access and intensify the development of digital service infrastructures.
He added that the Ministry of Communication and Informatics has been directed to speed up the development of telecommunication infrastructures in Indonesia's frontier, outermost, and underdeveloped regions to expand the coverage of telecommunication services.
"At the same time, all cellular operators and industry players are aligning steps to pursue the desired acceleration," he noted.
According to Setiadi, the development of digital infrastructures is playing a vital role in stimulating economic growth and sustaining Indonesia's economic prowess, which took a hard blow due to the COVID-19-era restrictions.
The minister, however, stressed that Indonesia must not rest on its success in raising the Internet speed given that the figure is still trailing far behind China's.
China managed to boost Internet speed from 9.46 Mbps in 2014 to as much as 248.92 Mbps in 2024, he pointed out.

"This signifies that China has achieved a remarkable (internet speed) increase of 26 times," he said.
The minister made the remarks at the launch of an internet-related documentary film produced by the Indonesian Internet Service Provider Association (APJII).
He said he expects the film to inspire all relevant stakeholders to continue to aim for even broader Internet coverage across Indonesia.
