Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Environment Ministry (KLH) is carrying out a comprehensive audit and study to determine the new target for mangrove rehabilitation, which was previously set at 600 thousand hectares. The deadline for the task of rehabilitating the 600 thousand hectares of mangroves, which was assigned to the Peatland and Mangrove Agency (BRGM), expired at the end of 2024, director of terrestrial ecosystem protection and management at KLH, Puji Iswari, told ANTARA in Jakarta on Friday.
“Setting a new target requires a comprehensive study involving stakeholders and local governments. One consideration is the BRGM’s mangrove rehabilitation achievements in the previous period, which is currently undergoing an audit,” Iswari said.
Another crucial step is to inventory the mangrove ecosystem to preserve its current condition, as mandated by Government Regulation Number 27 of 2025 concerning the Protection and Management of Mangrove Ecosystems.
“To achieve the rehabilitation targets, which are a part of the Mangrove Ecosystem Recovery program, the Environment Ministry Regulation on Mangrove Ecosystem Inventory Procedures is currently being drafted by the KLH,” she informed.
She said that coordination is essential for mangrove management, given that the majority of mangrove ecosystems in Indonesia are located within forest areas or conservation areas under the jurisdiction of the Forestry Ministry.

Iswari noted that there are also coastal areas under the jurisdiction of the Marine Affairs and Fisheries Ministry (KKP). The rest of the mangroves are located in other areas.
