Surabaya, East Java (ANTARA) - The Indonesian contingent dominated karate at the 2024 ASEAN University Games (AUG) held in Surabaya and Malang, East Java from 25 June to July 6, 2024.

They secured the overall championship with 10 gold medals, 5 silver medals, and 6 bronze medals. Nelson Noak, the Indonesian karate team manager, expressed his gratitude for their achievements in a statement released on Sunday.

"We are grateful to wing the overall championship at the 2024 AUG. This can be realized because of the commitment of the chair of the Indonesian Karate-do Federation (Forki) Hadi Tjahjanto who had carried out leveled training for karate," he said.

The final gold medal was bagged by Indonesia in the women's team kumite event, winning against Thailand with a score of 9–5.

Thailand is ranked second in the karate medal tally with four gold medals, eight silver medals, and one bronze medal. Meanwhile, the third place is secured by Malaysia with three gold medals, three silver medals, and eight bronze medals.

Noak explained that for the biennial multisports event, Forki sent its best athletes who had participated in a two-week training camp.

Ceyco Georgia Zefanya, an Indonesian karate athlete, expressed her pride in bringing home a gold medal for Indonesia at the AUG 2024

"We are determined to perform optimally. We motivated each other to give a perfect closing for Indonesia at the AUG 2024," she said.
