"The recovery of hundreds of hectares of degraded conservation land is targeted to be completed in 2019"
Mataram, W. Nusa Tenggara (Antaranews NTB) - The Tambora National Park (BTNT) in Sumbawa Island has planned to restore 200 hectares of land in the preserved area that had undergone degradation due to land encroachment.

"The recovery of hundreds of hectares of degraded conservation land is targeted to be completed in 2019," head of BTNT Budhy Kurniawan stated here on Thursday.

Under the restoration program, he remarked that 90 thousand trees will be planted in the park in 2018, and the number could reach 180 thousand by 2019.

The restoration program will encompass four blocks in the conservation area: Resort Oi Ketupa covering the Oi Ketupa block and Kawinda Toi block in Bima District and Resort Doro Ncanga that includes the Doro Ncanga block and Doropeti block in Dompu District.

The BTNT will start formulating a technical plan for the program and prepare a list of the initial vegetation.

It will be followed by social, economic, and cultural identification before the agency can establish a farmers` group in the two resorts that will be involved in the replanting program.

"We will thereafter introduce the replanting program to the locals," he remarked.

Among the trees to be planted in the area are endemic species, including katoi, Kalago (Duabanga moluccana), longgo (Drypetes subcubica), pulai (Alstonia scholaris), banyan tree, and tamarind.

Some fruit trees, such as durian, will be planted in the boundary of the preserved area.

Kurniawan noted that the involvement of the local community in the replanting program is aimed at empowering them.

"Those who participate in the replanting program will receive incentives. This ecosystem recovery program will be continued in 2020," he added.  (*)
