Badung, Bali (ANTARA) - The Directorate General of Intellectual Property (DJKI) of the Law and Human Rights Ministry has emphasized the importance of protecting genetic resources and traditional knowledge to support people’s welfare.

"Indonesia is a country rich in biodiversity, with a wide range of genetic resources and traditional knowledge," Director General of Intellectual Property Min Usihen said at a regional meeting in Jimbaran, Badung, Bali, on Tuesday.

According to him, Indonesia is hugely committed to maintaining and protecting intellectual property (IP), genetic resources, and traditional knowledge through Government Regulation (PP) No. 56 of 2022 concerning IP.

He said in recent years, genetic resources and traditional knowledge have become increasingly important for the Indonesian economy, particularly in the pharmaceutical, agricultural, and cosmetics industries.

Therefore, Indonesia invited delegates present at the meeting to promote the protection and utilization of genetic resources and traditional knowledge associated with genetic resources in the global community. "This regional meeting gives us an opportunity to exchange ideas and experiences and strengthen collaboration on IP issues," Usihen said.

The regional meeting was held by the DJKI in collaboration with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Hundreds of delegates from 48 countries in the Asia-Pacific region and the WIPO Secretariat attended the event.

In 2022, the DJKI launched the Automatic Approval of Copyright Registration and the Automatic Approval of Trademark Application.
