Jakarta (ANTARA) - The National Sports Committee of Indonesia (KONI) targeted Indonesia's contingent to reach the top 30 rankings in the upcoming 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, France.

KONI Chairperson Marciano Norman explained that the prospects of clinching more gold medals hinged on the performance of athletes in Indonesia's flagship sports, such as badminton, weightlifting, and rock climbing.

"Besides getting the gold medal from badminton, we also expect athletes competing in weightlifting, archery, surfing, and rock climbing to help us gain more gold medals," Norman stated in ANTARA's podcast on Thursday.

"Hence, when we got only one gold medal and ranked in 55th place in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, we can reach the top 30 if we get two or three more (gold) medals in the Paris Olympics," the KONI chief stated.

During the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan, Indonesia's contingent secured five medals, comprising one gold medal, one silver medal, and three bronze medals.

Indonesia stands a greater chance of featuring in the top 30 ranking in the Olympics if the contingent were to bag more than one gold medal, he stated.

However, it will require Indonesia's contingent to surpass the nation's feat at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, Spain, when Alan Budikusuma and Susi Susanti pocketed two gold medals for Indonesia in the men's and women's singles badminton.

"If we want to achieve more in the Paris Olympics, we should bag more than one gold medal. However, throughout Indonesia's history in the Olympics, our only occasion where we got more than one was in Barcelona (Olympics)," Norman stated.

The 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris will take place from July 26 to August 11, 2024, and feature 24 medal sports. For the 2024 Summer Olympics, Indonesia has secured participation in rock climbing, gymnastics, archery, surfing, and shooting, he noted.
